MemSQL Overview and Review

MemSQL is a new database technology that has speeds up to thirty times faster than a traditional MySQL database. The folks who will benefit most are those who run websites that have over a million visitors a month.

MemSQL is memory based and converts the code to C++.  Other features include the usage of skip lists and lock free data structures.

Some of the reasons why it's so fast are because it utilizes Group commit which helps when multiple users are attempting to enter data into the database at the same time. The snapshot and log files are written into the database sequentially which allows for better performance than a random I/O. Finally, page swapping is a thing of the past and the wait times for the read query are gone completely.

MemSQL is coming out with query routing in September. This feature was not in the original version of the technology. Many more upgrades are currently in the works.

It's very easy to get started with Memsql.  Just visit their home page at www.MemSQL.com and look for the developers tab.
